“Slow down, you move too fast.” – Simon and Garfunkel
Yesterday I was doing a bit of work and glancing out the window now and then. I happened to see a blue jay and a cardinal in my flowering crab tree. Birds have been scarce around here lately, so I got kind of excited about it. I went to grab my camera, and by the time I got back to the window, the pretty birds were replaced with a black squirrel. I like squirrels and I haven’t seen many of them around here lately either so I started to snap away. The squirrel seemed to be posing for his picture and I couldn’t wait to see what I got. Then, to my horror, I discovered that my card was in the card reader and not my camera. Bah humbug.
Thankfully, my mom called at just the right time to offer me lunch at her house. I put my sulking ways aside, grabbed my camera and wandered over to my parents’ house. I KNEW there would be things to take pictures of there. I got shots of a crow and lots of squirrels. I wish I had taken a tripod along. My macro lens doesn’t like my shaky ways, but still, it was fun. Then, finally, one of my favorite birds got to one of the feeders. Point, focus, click. Argh. They are notorious for eating and flying and today was no exception. I knew I didn’t get him.
When I got home and uploaded my photos to my computer, lo and behold, I caught him in the act of being in a hurry. It’s kind of a weird shot, but I’m thinking of printing it to remind my kids, especially my son, not to be in such a hurry to eat and run (or fly, as the case may be). This little guy could’ve been famous had he sat still for just a few more seconds.
Are you always in a hurry? What’s your rush? Do you ever sit down and watch the birds? I really needed that lunch with my furry and feathered friends yesterday. Life is zipping by at lightning speed lately and I’m pretty sure I’ve missed a few things.
Oh, one last thing: Can you tell what kind of bird my almost famous friend is? Brownie points for the first one who gets the right answer!
I’m off to hum “Feelin’ Groovy” now. If you care to join me, try this: 59th Street Bridge Song
